Family Therapy

Our lives are full of relationships of various kinds. Among the most important of these is one’s relationship with their family. As you progress through therapy, and learn more about you and your family, you may wish to involve them in your sessions.

If we determine that involving your family will benefit both you and your family, and if your family agrees to participate, family sessions are a great option.

Some of the issues that benefit from family therapy are: depression, anxiety, stress, and family conflict. It is also a powerful tool for treating codependency, unhealthy coping skills, and an unhealthy work/life balance.

Furthermore, in many Asian families, mental health issues are often not discussed. Ingrained cultural norms and expectations can undermine the importance of mental health. Family therapy can be a powerful tool for psychoeducation. It offers a safe, respectful environment in which individuals and families can discuss mental health issues.

In inter-cultural or inter-racial households, varying cultural expectations can make communication challenging. It may also affect how mental health is understood and discussed. Family therapy is an effective tool to foster a deeper understanding about one another.

In all families, regardless of cultural background, each family’s unique history plays a role in their family dynamics. Family therapy can help family members gain a common understanding about mental health and improve their communication skills.
